Meet other vanlifers

How to meet other vanlifers on the road.

Meeting people on the road usually happens by accident at a trailhead or a dump station. RME makes it deliberate: Meet cards built on shared interests and travel styles, events and caravans you can join, and a Friends Map for the people you already know. It is platonic by design, and you decide what you share.

The short answer

Three ways to meet people in RME

Meet shows you Discover cards: a traveler’s photo, bio, interests and rig. Pass or connect, start a conversation, and arrange a coffee, a hike or a campfire. Events on the Roam map are hikes, meetups and gatherings near you, filtered by distance and date, with Going, a waitlist and an event chat. Caravans are dated routes someone publishes so others can follow along and meet at the stops.

RME is not a dating app. Meet is built around friendship and an outdoor community. You can hide yourself from Discover at any time, blocked people cannot find or message you, and every conversation has a report control.

01

Meet cards

Your card uses the same bio and interests as your profile, with a Meet-only photo if you want one and your rig art. “Show me in Discover” is a switch you control.

02

Events and caravans

Public, Friends, Attending and Mine filters; Happening now, Next 7 days, Next 30 days or Next year; Going and a waitlist; a chat for everyone going.

03

Your boundaries

Hide from Discover, block, report, and share your location only with mutual friends at the precision you choose. Event and caravan chats move to Archived a day after they end.

How it works in RME

From a card to a campfire

  1. 01

    Set up your discovery card

Edit your bio and interests, choose a card photo, and turn on “Show me in Discover.” People who follow you can find you.

  2. 02

    Browse Discover

Cards show travelers nearby with their interests and travel style. People you passed on come back for another look after a week, then a month, then a year. The app shows your daily swipe allowance.

  3. 03

    Start a conversation

Messages land in Primary, with General for new conversations until you move them. Filters: People, Events, Caravans, Market and Unread.

  4. 04

    Meet in public first

Pick a populated spot in daylight, keep your own transport, tell someone your plan, and leave if it feels wrong. The Safety page has the full checklist.

  5. 05

Or skip the one-to-one and join an event

Mark yourself Going on a hike or campfire near you and say hi in the event chat before you arrive.

Meet is included with a free RME account, with unlimited swipes.

Details that matter

Before you count on it.

Where vanlifers actually meet

Events near you are ranked by people going, then the waitlist, with RME picks first. Caravans publish a schedule of stops, so you can join at any remaining stop and arrange the meetup in the caravan chat. Friends Map, once you are mutual friends, shows where people are at the precision they chose: a town, a point within 20 miles, or precise.

What you never have to share

  • Your exact location: Friends Map has Ghost, Town, Approximate and Precise modes, and Precise has its own audience of all friends or selected friends.
  • Your overnight spot: Explore posts do not need a location, and the Safety page asks you not to publish an exact overnight location while you are still there.
  • Your real-time whereabouts to strangers: Meet cards do not show your position, and location sharing is mutual-friends only.
Straight answers

Questions about meet other vanlifers.

The details that help you decide how RME fits your next trip.

Is RME a dating app?

No. Meet is designed for platonic friendship and an outdoor travel community, with connections around shared interests and travel styles.

Can I meet travelers with a free account?

Yes. Unlimited Meet swipes, Events and Friends Map are included with a free RME account.

Can people see where I am?

Not unless you choose to share. Meet cards do not show your location. Friends Map is mutual-friends only, and you pick Ghost, Town, Approximate (a point within 20 miles) or Precise, for 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours or until you turn it off.

What can I do about unwanted contact?

Block the account so they can no longer find your profile or message you, and report the conversation to the RME safety team; the other member is not notified. For an immediate threat, contact local emergency services.

How do caravans work?

A host publishes a dated route with stops, a meeting point and notes, and chooses who can see it: Public, Friends or only people chosen. You mark Going or Interested and use the caravan chat to arrange the meetup.
